According to a report by insider.com, computer systems in 23 Texas towns were breached and infected with ransomware, all by one attacker on August 16, 2019. The Texas Department of Information Resources confirmed the report. Although unconfirmed, two towns paid over $1 million each to release their data, with two other towns paying $500,000 and $600,000 respectively, with more sure to follow. It is no secret municipalities and their departments are low hanging fruit for hackers and will continue to be well into the future.
