Special Task Litigation

Experienced South Carolina counsel for high-profile cases

The Special Task Litigation Group at Young Clement Rivers, LLP is comprised of highly experienced partners, associates, and special counsel who handle complex litigation matters in a variety of areas. The group has successfully litigated high-profile state and federal court cases involving:

  • Commercial disputes
  • Real estate disputes
  • Partnership and shareholder disputes
  • Insurance disputes
  • Health care disputes
  • Investment fraud, including Ponzi scheme litigation
  • White collar criminal defense
  • Environmental matters, including:
    • CERCLA
    • Superfund
    • South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) disputes
  • Complex 501(c)(3) issues

The attorneys in the Special Task Litigation Group have extensive experience in litigation, mediation, and arbitration. Group members have held positions with state and local government, clerkships with the South Carolina state and federal courts and solicitor's office, and are certified mediators and arbitrators. The group’s leader, Rutledge Young, is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a diplomate of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and has tried more than 200 cases to jury verdict. Former Circuit Court and Court of Appeals judge William L. Howard is one of the group’s resources.

A record of success

The group measures its success by the number of cases it wins. In cases tried to jury verdict, the group has a greater than 85 percent success rate. However, the lawyers also understand that winning does not always mean a successful court verdict.
The group believes that an open and big-picture approach to dispute resolution can often provide better results while avoiding both the court system and the public eye. The firm empowers each individual attorney to manage and resolve cases in a manner that best serves the client’s needs.

The group has resolved disputes and litigation headed to trial through numerous alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods, including mediation, arbitration, summary jury trials, and of course, settlement. With many of the attorneys certified as arbitrators and mediators, the group has an inside track on identifying which alternative dispute resolution method best suits a particular case or client.

Efficient, nimble representation

The group generally uses one partner as the responsible attorney, backed-up by an associate and legal assistant. This concept of thin to win, coupled with very competitive legal fees, means that the client’s legal work is often performed for less than the initial budget. Through integration of service, technology, and strategy, the group's attorneys deliver highly efficient case management along with a depth of legal experience.

The attorneys of the Special Task Litigation Group have resolved a variety of cases. Some examples include:

  • A significant corporate dispute involving the formation of a new port complex
  • Disputes among limited and general partners in projects that have not turned out as originally planned
  • Several environmental disputes involving Fortune 200 companies
  • Counsel in a decade-long sexual abuse litigation case involving a private 501(c)(3) school
  • Numerous class actions
  • Counsel in complex investment scheme litigation
